Students admitted or accepted for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Program (LExS) will study at Leiden University in the Netherlands.
Level and Field of Study
Leiden University offers all full-time Master’s programs, with the exception of a few that have specific requirements:
- Leiden Law School’s LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programmes
- Study programs at Leiden Law School, the Faculty of Sciences, and the Faculty of Humanities that starts in February.

Amount of Awards
Faculty departments receive a specific budget, which enables them to allocate scholarships accordingly. As a result, the number and type of scholarships awarded are determined by the department’s budget allocation.
Target audience
The Scholarship targets individuals/students from Non-EEA/non-EFTA* nationals; all nationalities for certain courses (see below).
Application Deadline: 1 Oct/1 Feb (every year(annual))
Scholarship value
There are three awards available for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program:
• € 10.000 of the tuition fee
• € 15.000 of the tuition fee
• Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
NOTE: The LExS is not a full scholarship. In order to process their student visa or residence permit application, non-EEA LExS recipients must actively provide proof of sufficient funds. Specifically, they must submit this documentation in conjunction with their application.
Eligibility
- Students who have consistently achieved outstanding academic results in their previous education will set themselves up for success in their Master’s application. By ranking among the top 10% of graduates from their previous academic program, they will demonstrate their exceptional performance and establish a strong foundation for their future studies Note: While proof of ranking is not necessary, this information serves as a competitive indicator, showcasing the level of competitiveness.
- Applicants must hold a non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and are generally ineligible for Dutch study grants and loans, except in specific cases.

How to apply:
Firstly, apply online for Leiden University’s Master’s program through their official platform. Once submitted, eligible applicants can access the LExS scholarship in the online system.
Then, clearly state your interest for the LExS program and upload a compelling motivation letter through the application portal.
For programs starting in September, the application deadline is 1 February. In contrast, programs starting in February have a deadline of 1 October.
